SMU guard Jefferson Koulibaly will enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to a report from North Pole Hoops’ Josh Millican on Monday. Koulibaly spent just one season on the Hilltop after transferring from Washington State.

The Montreal, Quebec native played in 18 games with one start for the Mustangs. He averaged 8.4 minutes per game, shooting 36 percent from the field and 46 percent from three-point range. He averaged just 1.6 points, .9 rebounds and .7 assists per game.

The Quebec native medically redshirted in 2020-21 before battling injuries in 2021-22.

Koulibaly played in 16 games, averaging 2.6 points, .5 assists and .9 rebounds per game in 8.2 minutes per game in 2021-22 for the Cougars. The 6-3 guard scored a career high in his first collegiate game, netting 13 points in 18 minutes (adding three rebounds and three assists) against Alcorn State Nov. 9.

SMU honored four seniors on Senior Day against Memphis, which means five scholarships are now open for Rob Lanier’s staff to work with. Guards Zach Nutall and Darius McBride along with forwards Efe Odigie and Frank Agunanne were honored.

Koulibaly is the first SMU player to be reportedly entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.
