With a decade of experience in recruiting and team coverage, Billy began covering SMU in 2011, joining the Scout site in 2013. Merging with 247Sports in 2017 grew the following, which included multiple coaching searches. He’s been with On3 covering SMU since January 2022.
Billy brings experience covering basketball, football and recruiting for Mustang fans, which comes with him to On3 and On The Pony Express.
For SMU fans unfamiliar with his work, Billy’s early coverage included the Matt Doherty and June Jones eras ending, which led to Larry Brown’s magical run as coach of the Mustangs. Football also elevated during that time, reaching bowl eligibility numerous times under three different coaches.
Chad Morris revitalized interest in recruiting and since then, recruiting coverage never slowed down for Billy as Sonny Dykes took over and Rhett Lashlee is now at the helm. he brings the most in-depth recruiting coverage Mustang fans could want whether it be from the high school ranks or transfer portal.
Billy married the former Michelle Pitoniak in May 2022. Michelle’s cat, Maddie, and Billy’s dog, Ace, have gotten along better than you could imagine two old animals being thrown together. Billy attended SMU in Dallas, graduating with journalism and sport management degrees in 2014. He walked on SMU’s football team and spent time in the recruiting department. From 2015-2020, he worked in football operations for the Washington Redskins, advancing road games. Billy also covers LSU for On3, running The Bengal Tiger.
