After opting not to air their annual Garnet and Black spring football game on April 18, South Carolina will soon be taking over the airwaves on the SEC Network with a 30-minute special.

On Tuesday, June 17, “South Carolina Football: The Program” will offer an all-access look into Shane Beamer’s team. The special will air at 7 p.m.

This past spring, of the 16 SEC teams, all but Texas A&M opted not to have their spring games televised this year. ESPN gave every team in the conference the option to either air their game live on the SEC Network/SEC Network Plus or provide a 30-minute original spring football show to replace it that would air on ESPN platforms.

Weighing out the pros and cons of each, South Carolina opted to provide a show.

“If all of you guys are recruits for us, we can let you know when this show is coming on, and you can watch this and learn a lot about our football program,” Beamer said in April. “It would probably be more impactful from a recruiting standpoint than watching a two-hour spring game on television.”

An additional challenge that some coaches throughout college football have added is that players who perform well in spring games may be offered a better role or more money from other programs. With loose transfer portal rules and NIL continuing to grow, this has been a growing concern throughout the sport.

While many fans understood the decision, some who weren’t able to attend the game were frustrated. Beamer understood where that frustration came from but spoke further about the Gamecocks’ decision.

“From a competitive standpoint, if there’s a spring game on television, we tape it and we watch it, and that’s how we can watch personnel,” said Beamer. “We could watch their spring game and just kind of get an idea about personnel and who’s lined up where, and things like that as well.”
