Gamecocks in Minor League Baseball: July Recap

Big moves were made for multiple former South Carolina athletes in July. With only two months remaining in most MiLB seasons, let’s take a look at how former Gamecocks are performing.

Garrett Gainey – Bowling Green Hot Rods

July was a busy month for Hartsville native Gainey. On July 1, Gainey was assigned to the Montgomery Biscuits from the Hot Rods. But just 18 days later, Gainey was reassigned to the Hot Rods from Montgomery.

The month started rocky for Gainey, who pitched to a 54.00 ERA in 0.1 innings by giving up two runs on two hits on July 2. However, Gainey recovered and averaged a 1.93 ERA with 18.2 total innings across July.

Cole Messina – Spokane Indians

Messina battled through 73 at-bats in July, scraping together 18 hits with five RBI. In 2025, Messina is batting .259 compared to .247 in July alone. In addition, Messina earned a .313 OBP and .301 slugging average in July.

Eli Jones – Fort Myers Mighty Mussels

In just four appearances in July, Jones put together a 5.17 ERA across 15.2 innings with the Mighty Mussels. Jones allowed 11 runs across 14 hits, striking out 12 with five walks.

Braylen Wimmer Hartford Yard Goats

The Rockies called up Wimmer to their Double-A affiliate on July 18 from the Spokane Indians. Across July with both teams, Wimmer hit .313 and slugged .563 in 80 at-bats.

At the beginning of the month, Wimmer homered in three straight games from July 1-3. Then in his first game with the Yard Goats, Wimmer performed well at the plate as he went 2-for-4.

Jack Mahoney – Hartford Yard Goats

Alongside his former Gamecock teammate Wimmer, Mahoney averaged a season-low 1.74 ERA in 20.2 innings. With 17 strikeouts, Mahoney only allowed six runs on 14 hits in July.

Will Sanders – Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs reactivated Sanders on July 2 after being placed on the Development List on June 19. In July, Sanders put together a 4.37 ERA in five appearances on the mound. Across 22.2 innings, Sanders allowed 14 runs off 22 hits with 19 strikeouts.

James Hicks- Corpus Christi Hooks

Hicks spent yet another month on the 60-Day injured list after being transferred from the 7-Day injured list on May 12. The last time he took the mound was on April 24.

Noah Hall – Brooklyn Cyclones

In another dominant month for Hall, he pitched to a 1.42 ERA in July, down from a 2.45 ERA in June. On July 12, Hall threw a career-high seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts.

Hall has proven to be a valuable addition to the Cyclones, producing 14 strikeouts in July with just three earned runs.

Cade Austin – Tampa Tarpons

Austin took the mound six times in July, producing a 3.86 ERA for the Tarpons. Across 9.1 relief innings, Austin allowed just four runs off six hits compared to 12 strikeouts.

Brady Allen – Erie SeaWolves

On July 2, the SeaWolves transferred Allen to the Development List. Then on July 11, the SeaWolves reactivated Allen and put him back on the Development List on July 16. Allen is hitting .171 with one homer and seven RBI in 76 at-bats this year.

Julian Bosnic – Greensboro Grasshoppers

Bosnic took the mound six times in July with one start and five relief appearances. Bosnic produced a season low 1.08 ERA in July, down from a 2.53 ERA in June.

On the mound, Bosnic threw 12 strikeouts, allowing just one run off six hits in 8.1 innings.

Colin Burgess – Augusta Green Jackets

In 40 at-bats in July, Burgess only hit .175 with seven hits and four RBI. Burgess has continued to struggle at the plate in 2025 as he’s only hitting .214 with two homers and 12 RBI.

Wes Clarke – Corpus Christi Hooks

In his first full month with the Hooks, Clarke hit .175 with four homers and 10 RBI across 80 at-bats. Clarke was traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Houston Astros on June 19.

Carlos Cortes – Athletics

On July 22, Cortes got the call every baseball player dreams of. The Athletics called up Cortes, and he has since begun his MLB journey. In the Majors, Cortes hit .292 at the plate in 24 at-bats in July.

Thomas Farr – Chattanooga Lookouts

After pitching just one inning in June, Farr took the mound seven times in July. In 8.2 innings, Farr had a 2.08 ERA, allowing just two runs off 8 hits. On July 13, Farr pitched a month-high 3.0 innings, allowing just four hits and one run.

Brett Kerry – Salt Lake Bees

Across four innings in July, Kerry pitched to a 5.06 ERA for the Salt Lake Bees. After getting off to a rocky start with a 10.17 ERA on July 4, Kerry brought his ERA down nearly two runs by July 29. But Kerry now has a 4-7 record across 2025 with an 8.45 ERA.

Daniel Lloyd – Chesapeake Baysox

Across July, Lloyd dominated, producing a 0.00 ERA, allowing just three hits and no runs. On July 3, Lloyd earned the win against the SeaWolves after 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Lloyd earned another win on July 11, pitching to a 2.31 ERA and allowing no runs.

TJ Shook – Binghamton Rumble Ponies

Shook brought his ERA down from 4.38 in June to 2.45 in July. Across seven innings, Shook started one game and pitched 11.0 innings.

Allowing just three runs off of nine hits, Shook pitched six strikeouts.

Chris Veach – Tampa Tarpons

Veach appeared in seven games across July. He went 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA, 11 strikeouts and five walks in 10 innings of work. He’s had a really nice season with the Tarpons as he’s pitched to a 1.96 ERA with 56 strikeouts and six saves in 41.1 innings of relief.
