The Garnet and Black spring game was the first opportunity for South Carolina’s transfers and incoming freshman and transfers to don Gamecock colors in front of a home crowd.

Here’s a recap of the major performers from both squads.

Trey Knox

The Spencer Rattler-Trey Knox connection is off to a flying start.

The two combined for three catches and 15 yards in the first quarter, including a 3-yard touchdown on the opening drive. When Tanner Bailey entered the game to relieve Rattler, he continued feeding Knox with targets.

Knox finished the game with six catches for 40 yards, the second-most on the Black team behind Antwane Wells.

LaNorris Sellers

Entering the game in the third quarter, LaNorris Sellers showed flashes of his athletic playmaking from the first snap.

Sellers finished the game as the leading rusher for the Garnet team with 42 yards. He also connected with the Gamecocks’ D.J. Black on a 50-yard pass that got the squad into the red zone.

On another play, Sellers was forced to scramble after a snap flew over his head and made a cross-body throw on the run.

Eddie Lewis

Even though Eddie Lewis made only caught two passes, he had many opportunities to show his speed on deep balls. Both Lewis’ catches went for big gains – 22 and 15 yards, respectively. He was also targeted many more times on deep balls that were overthrown.

Lewis and Wells were a potent duo for the Black team’s air attack, combining for 126 yards on four catches.

Joshua Simon

The Garnet team’s offense struggled in the first half but Joshua Simon was one of the squad’s bright spots. His five receptions were a team high, and his 26 yards were the second-highest.

With Knox getting a nearly identical number of catches for the Garnet team, the pair look to be prime targets in the South Carolina passing game.

Mario Anderson

Another early producer for the Gamecocks’ Garnet team was Mario Anderson, who totaled 14 yards on five carries. Anderson broke tackles on multiple of those runs, including his game-high 8-yard rush early in the second quarter.

Elijah Davis

While Elijah Davis’ efforts were not shown on the stat sheet, he established an overwhelming presence on the defensive line. Davis consistently put pressure on South Carolina’s Black offensive line and forced a fumble in the second quarter.

Offensive linemen

Nick Gargiulo, Sidney Fugar and Markee Anderson all featured prominently on their respective offensive lines.

Gargiulo and Fugar, who were on the Garnet team, started in all the team’s series in the first half. Both were on the left side of the line – Gargiulo at guard, and Fugar at tackle.

On the Black team, Anderson lined up at both left guard and left tackle before halftime, showing his positional flexibility across the offensive line.
