In-state right-handed pitcher commits to South Carolina

South Carolina earned a transfer portal commitment from right-handed pitcher Amp Phillips on Wednesday.
“On to the next… Go Cocks!” Phillips said in an X (formerly known as Twitter) post to confirm the news.
Phillips, a Lancaster, SC, native, spent the first two seasons of his college career at Spartanburg Methodist College. As a freshman, he posted a 5-1 record with a 4.53 ERA. He only appeared in two games as a sophomore, logging 5.1 innings with six strikeouts.
Because of his limited work on the mound in 2024, Phillips was able to redshirt and then transferred to USC Upstate this season. In 20 appearances with 12 starts, he went 7-2 with a 3.64 ERA across 84 innings. He struck out 81 batters and walked 29 while holding opponents to a .212 batting average.

Phillips pitched one complete game this year, a nine-inning shutout against Winthrop on May 22. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder only allowed four hits and struck out five with a walk over 102 pitches. He also picked up two saves out of the bullpen before moving into the Spartans’ rotation in mid-March.

This will be a very active offseason for South Carolina as it looks to bounce back from a disappointing 28-29 record this season. The Gamecocks have now added four transfers, including Louisiana-Monroe reliever Josh Gregoire, Purdue first baseman Logan Sutter and Samford two-way player Cullen Horowicz.
The transfer portal opened on Monday, June 2, and will remain open until July 1 for all players.
