For the second straight week South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer revealed a major injury to the Gamecocks EDGE room Tuesday during his weekly press conference, this one to a transfer who was hoping to make an immediate impact.

“No new injury updates that are long-term other than George Wilson, an EDGE transfer that was going to play for us this season, he’s going to be out for a while as well, which is unfortunate,” Beamer said. “We’ve kind of gotten hit pretty good at that one spot, which is disappointing from a depth standpoint. But a lot of guys that are there that are competing and working to get better.”

Beamer added that if Wilson is unable to play this season, then there’s a very real chance for the senior to get an additional year to return in 2026.

“We’ll see what happens this year, but we’re already working to get him back in 2026, absolutely, if we’re not able to get him back in 2025,” Beamer said. “Disappointing for him to not be ready to go right now and to be out for a little bit, but like I told him, you try to find the positive in everything, and what I told him is maybe this is a positive because you didn’t get here until June and now you have a chance, if you’re not able to get back in 2025, you have an entire offseason in the weight room where you should be an even better version of yourself in 2026 if you’re not able to get back in ’25.”

Wilson was excited to finally suit up for South Carolina in what was going to be a full circle moment for the transfer from Campbell.

He originally committed to the Gamecocks as a high school recruit over five years ago but ultimately decommitted and signed with Florida State when Will Muschamp was fired.

After starting his college career in Tallahassee, the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder spent the last two seasons at Campbell, where he collected a combined nine sacks in those two years.

In 2023, Wilson’s first year with the Fighting Camels, Wilson played in all 11 games, making four starts with 21 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and a team-high four sacks.

This past season, he played in 12 games with seven starts, collecting 18 tackles, including 6.0 TFLs and five sacks.

With one year of eligibility left, Wilson entered the transfer portal hoping for an opportunity to return to the Power 4 level.

Ironically, it was the school that he was originally committed to that called.

“I got in the portal and coach Sterl Luc called me and I thought it was a no-brainer,” Wilson told GamecockCentral prior to camp starting. “I wanted to be at South Carolina out of high school, and I thought it was a no-brainer, so I just ended the deal there.”

The news for Wilson comes after Beamer said last week that freshman EDGE Kobby Sakyi-Prah would be out with a “somewhat long-term” lower body injury.

Prior to the start of camp, Beamer said that EDGE Jaylen Brown, offensive lineman Ryan Brubaker, defensive lineman Caleb Williams, and defensive back Zahbari Sandy were all out with injuries that are not considered to be short term.

South Carolina’s fifth-year head coach also added Tuesday that there is still nothing new on incoming transfer running back Rahsul Faison.
