Latest on two injured Gamecocks ahead of Auburn series

South Carolina will head to No. 8 Auburn to begin its final SEC road series this weekend. But once again, the team will be without its star player.
Head coach Paul Mainieri said Ethan Petry will be out for the second straight weekend. The junior outfielder suffered a shoulder injury when the Gamecocks were at Kentucky last month. He’s been dealing with “a strain of the AC joint in his left shoulder.”
“We’d be lucky to have him back, probably for the SEC Tournament, is my guess. I guess there’s an outside chance for the LSU series,” Mainieri said. “I mean, he’s getting better every day, but I knew it was going to probably be a four-week process.”
Petry is currently hitting .329 with 10 homers and 34 RBIs in 43 games. He sits 10 home runs away from breaking Justin Smoak’s career all-time program record of 62.

While Petry won’t be available when the team goes to Auburn, he’s continued to receive treatment from the training staff every day. His injury is supposed to have a two-to-four-week recovery time.

“I know the kid desperately wants to get back and play. God, he’s such a great kid. I mean, I’m brokenhearted about the injury,” Mainieri said. “… He’s had such a great career here, and you hate to see it end with him not being able to play. So I know he’s trying to get back and but I don’t think there’s any chance he’ll play this weekend.”
Freshman first baseman Beau Hollins has also been dealing with an injury from the recent road trip to Kentucky. Mainieri said the back of Hollins’ knee had been sore from sliding during one of the games that weekend. He still played in the next two games but missed the team’s doubleheader against Florida on Sunday.
“I just talked to Beau, and I think it’s a little bit better,” Mainieri said. “He’s not going to go through a full practice today. He’s going to do what he can do. It’ll probably be a game day decision.”
The Gamecocks will begin their three-game series with the Tigers on Thursday at Plainsman Park. First pitch will be at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
