Meechie Johnson working way out of slump with versatile all-around abilities
It’s no secret that Gamecock guard Meechie Johnson hit a mid-season slump. But recently, Johnson has slowly inched his way back to success.
Earlier in the season, Johnson’s confidence was high as his shots were sinking. Entering the second half of the season as his play slowed down, Johnson tried to remain confident.
“As far as where we are at and confidence, I feel like everyone knows their roles and stuff like that so we’re just really happy as to where we are at as a team right now,” Johnson said back in January.

To start the 2023-2024 season, Johnson scored a season-high 29 points against Notre Dame on Nov. 28. In the first six games, Johnson averaged 12 points per game. Also, In the last six games, Johnson has averaged just seven points per game.
After hitting a low zero points against Missouri on Jan. 27, Johnson alongside head coach Lamont Paris have worked to bounce back. However, against the Tigers, Johnson went 0-for-9 from the field and 0-for-7 from the three-point line.

“The best thing I can do is continue to believe in him, my belief is as high as it can possibly be,” Paris said. “We’ll talk, maybe watch a little film. He normally likes to do that after a rough game or even some of the good ones.”

Nevertheless, as the team continues players like Ta’Lon Cooper have helped pick up slack in areas where Meechie has struggled. Johnson and the team continue to focus on the next game and moving forward together.
“We really just stay together, we focus on every single game, we haven’t got too caught up in what the team has done or what the record looks like,” Johnson said. We just try to take it game by game and stay together.”
At Georgia last weekend, Johnson scored 11 points and went 4-for-8 from the field. Against Ole Miss, Johnson scored six points going 2-for-9 from the field. While the shots haven’t been falling consistently, he’s found other ways to be productive with good defense, rebounding and being able to assist at a high rate.
