It was a battle of attrition as South Carolina’s depth was tested at a couple of key positions Sunday in the Gamecocks’ 24-11 season-opening win over Virginia Tech.

Starting cornerback Judge Collier, poised to take another step this season, exited the game early and did not return. He was spotted on crutches on the sidelines with a cast on his knee.

“Judge got hurt, to answer your question (the severity is) to be determined, it’s a little bit of a knee injury right now,” Beamer said. “We’ll see when we get back to Columbia, but he was not able to return, obviously.”

The secondary depth was already under strain, considering that preseason All-SEC defensive back Jalon Kilgore appeared to be on a pitch count at his usual nickelback spot.

“He had a little bit of hamstring that had been nagging this week,” Beamer said.

Transfer cornerback Myles Norwood also appeared to exit the game early, but Beamer did not provide an update on the former Ball State starter.

The story was similar at the EDGE position.

Sophomore sensation Dylan Stewart appeared to ding his shoulder while delivering a hit to Virginia Tech quarterback Kyren Drones but was able to not only return to action but also impact the game off the edge.

Key reserve J.T. Geer also entered the medical tent with an undisclosed injury. Beamer did not provide an update.

Freshman offensive lineman Shed Sarratt, a Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Watch List honoree, will have to wait at least a week to make his South Carolina debut.

The former Gaffney standout was firmly in the mix for the starting left guard job but was not on the dress list.

“Sarratt wasn’t here today,” Beamer said. “He’s injured. He would have had a role in this game, most likely. He’s been out for a couple weeks, and thought we’re gonna be able to get him back, but he just wasn’t quite ready.”

Sources indicated to GamecockCentral that Sarratt isn’t expected to be out long, and could be back as soon as Week 2 vs. S.C. State.
