Shane Beamer: South Carolina 'pretty healthy' as game week arrives
Game week has officially arrived for South Carolina’s season opener against Virginia Tech and head coach Shane Beamer was of course asked at his weekly press conference if there was anyone new on the injury report or that might miss time for other reasons.
“No, not at this point,” Beamer said as he knocked on the wooden podium. “Pretty healthy. Nothing new injury-wise other than what we talked about last week. A couple of guys that are coming back from some soft tissue issues, hamstrings, groins, things like that, that I don’t think will keep them from playing on Sunday but may limit how much they do play. But no, we’re in pretty good shape as of today, compared to last week.”
Beamer had said a couple of weeks ago that nickelback Jalon Kilgore and EDGE Desmond Umeozulu were in that category of dealing with soft tissue issues or bumps and bruises but added that both likely could have played if it was gameday.
Arguably the biggest injury news of camp so far came a week ago when Beamer announced that EDGE George Wilson, brought in to supplement the pass rush, would be out for an extended amount of time. The fifth-year head coach acknowledged that they were already looking into the senior possibly getting an extra year to return in 2026 if he can’t play this season.

That news came after Beamer said the week prior that freshman EDGE Kobby Sakyi-Prah would be out with a “somewhat long-term” lower-body injury.
Prior to the start of camp, Beamer said that EDGE Jaylen Brown, offensive lineman Ryan Brubaker, defensive lineman Caleb Williams, and defensive back Zahbari Sandy were all out with injuries that are not considered to be short-term.
The Gamecocks are just four days away from Sunday’s season opener in the Aflac Kickoff Game. South Carolina and Virginia Tech are set to square off at 3:00 in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on ESPN.
