South Carolina baseball alum wins Player of the Month award

South Carolina baseball alum Braylen Wimmer has had a good start to his professional season. Following an offseason promotion from Low-A ball to the High-A Spokane Indians, Wimmer has been one of the top young performers in the Colorado Rockies organization. On Thursday, he earned distinction as the Northwest League’s Player of the Month for May. Last season, Wimmer won a Player of the Month in June for the Low-A Fresno Grizzlies.
Wimmer’s most recent award comes on the heels of a month in which he hit .337 while slugging four home runs and eight doubles. He logged a .927 OPS, scored 17 runs, and drove in 15 RBI while stealing 10 bases. He also won the league’s most recent Player of the Week honor.

He has earned the most playing time at third base, but he has played a lot at second base and both corner outfield spots, too. Wimmer owns a season-long slash line of .305/.370/.478/.848. He has seven home runs, 14 doubles, and 20 steals.

Wimmer’s South Carolina teammate Cole Messina has become a teammate again in the Colorado Rockies organization. Both Wimmer and Messina were drafted by the Rockies last summer and share a diamond again in Spokane. Messina has split his time between catcher and designated hitter this season. He has hit 5 home runs, 12 doubles, and one triple while driving in 22 runs and scoring 16 more.
Right-handed pitcher (and fellow former Gamecock) Jack Mahoney is also in the organization. He has progressed to the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats this spring. Mahoney had a strong debut season in 2024 but has struggled a bit in 2025.
