South Carolina basketball alum takes new Midlands coaching job

A former South Carolina basketball starter is making a coaching move. On Tuesday evening, Ridge View High School announced they were hiring a new girls basketball coach, and former Gamecock Aaron Lucas is the man for the job. Lucas spent the last six years as the head coach at Lower Richland, winning three consecutive region championships. With the Blazers, he will replace the long-tenured Terrence Gibson, who stepped down last month.
Lucas has been in coaching for over a decade, spending time at his alma mater Richland Northeast as the boys head coach before becoming a boys assistant and then the girls head coach at Lower Richland.
He also played professionally (primarily in Europe) for five years and won the 2003 LKL Slam Dunk Contest.

During his South Carolina basketball career, Lucas played for head coaches Eddie Fogler and Dave Odom. He started 101 games in garnet and black as the team’s primary point guard for most of his four years. As a senior, the Columbia native helped lead the Gamecocks to a 22-win season.
Lucas averaged 8.5 points, 3.7 assists, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.1 steals at South Carolina. He finished his career with over 1000 points and 450 assists, one of four Gamecocks ever to accomplish that feat. Lucas is fourth on USC’s all-time assists list and posted the eighth-best single-season assist total in program history (145) as a senior during the 2001-2002 campaign. He trails just legends like Melvin Watson, Jack Gilloon, and Tre Kelley on the assist leaderboard.
