Former South Carolina guard transfers to Summit League team

This offseason, the South Carolina basketball team has had a long list of players leave the program via the transfer portal–or, in the case of rising sophomore guard Cam Scott, enter the portal but return to the Gamecocks. The first player who announced an intention of transferring was redshirt freshman guard Austin Herro.
On Friday, the USC reserve committed to the St. Thomas Tommies. He announced the move on social media. Transferring to St. Thomas takes Herro back to Minnesota, much closer to his home state of Wisconsin.

Herro, who redshirted the 2023-2024 campaign as a walk-on, played sparingly this season. In 10 games of action, he logged two points and two total rebounds. Though South Carolina coach Lamont Paris put him on scholarship ahead of his second year on campus, Herro will have a much better opportunity to play consistently in the Summit League with St. Thomas.
Earlier this spring, fellow USC transfers Nick Pringle (Arkansas), Zach Davis (Memphis), and Arden Conyers (Charlotte) also found their new homes via the transfer portal. Morris Ugusuk, Okkue Federiko, and Jamarii Thomas have not committed to a new school. Thomas should be out of eligibility but entered the portal in case the NCAA grants him an extra year. As mentioned previously, Cam Scott initially entered the portal but will be with the Gamecocks next season.
