Earlier this offseason, former South Carolina basketball All-SEC guard Meechie Johnson announced his commitment to return to the Gamecocks for a sixth season of eligibility. Within minutes, another former USC starter from the 2023-2024 team teased some more good news as sharpshooting wing Myles Stute said on social media that he wanted to β€œrun it back,” too.

However, things went quiet regarding Stute for about a month.

On Friday, though, the University of South Carolina officially announced that Stute would return for the 2025-2026 season. According to the release, Stute has been cleared medically, and the NCAA granted the 6-6 wing an extra year of eligibility following a blood clot diagnosis that forced him to miss over half the 2024-2025 campaign.

Next season will mark Stute’s third year with the Gamecocks. Offseason workouts will begin in June.

After transferring from Vanderbilt ahead of the 2023-2024 campaign, Stute helped South Carolina to a program record for wins. The Gamecocks made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2016-2017 season.

A starter before injuries forced him into a reserve role the back half of the year, Stute averaged 8.4 points while shooting 38.5% from the perimeter. He also chipped in with 3.3 rebounds and provided some positional versatility. Stute was an emotional leader for the team who had some big clutch moments, as well.

This season, Stute played hurt a bit early but could not return after the blood clot sidelined him in January. He logged 5.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in 14 games for the Gamecocks.

Lamont Paris’ team will look a lot different than it did for South Carolina’s most recent NCAA Tournament run. However, with Stute and Johnson returning, there will be at least two players returning from that record-setting team. Forward Collin Murray-Boyles has declared for the NBA Draft but has two years of eligibility remaining if he elects to pull out of the draft before the mid-June deadline.
