Former South Carolina basketball star, Columbia native, has high school jersey retired

Former South Carolina basketball star PJ Dozier has had his high school jersey retired. The Columbia native and Spring Valley standout was honored on Wednesday night with SVHS retiring his No. 15 jersey during a ceremony at the school.
Dozier was a five-star prospect and McDonald’s All-American while playing at Spring Valley. He averaged nearly 20 points per game for the Vikings.
Dozier signed with the Gamecocks in the class of 2015, joining the same school where his father and uncle played in the 1980s and where his older sister was heading into her senior year. Perry Dozier (father) and Terry Dozier (uncle) played at USC from 1985-1989 under head coaches Bill Foster and George Felton. Asia Dozier (sister) played from 2012-2016 under head coach Dawn Staley, winning over 120 games in four years.
Like his sister, PJ won the state player of the year award as a senior in high school, being named Mr. Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year for the 2014-2015 season. That success translated to the collegiate level as he was an immediate starter with the Gamecocks.

During his time in garnet and black, Dozier averaged 10.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. Dozier was a versatile player on offense and a high-level defender for the Gamecocks. He played two years at Carolina, culminating with a run to the 2016-2017 Final Four. Dozier was at his best in that magical ride through the NCAA Tournament. No. 15 averaged 15.6 points per game and shot better than 50% from the field while playing great defense.
Dozier earned a spot on the 2016-2017 SEC Community Service Team for his off-court efforts around his Columbia community. Though he did not make the All-SEC team as voted on by the league’s coaches or media, he earned some all-conference recognition from outside publications. That season, Dozier became one of just a small handful of Gamecocks ever to score at least 500 points, while dishing out over 100 assists.
Following his USC career, Dozier spent parts of seven seasons in the NBA. He now plays professionally in Turkey.
