Former South Carolina receiver announces coaching move

Former South Carolina wide receiver Jason Barnes is on the move. Having been working his way up in the coaching world, Barnes spent the 2024 season as a full-time wide receivers coach for the Charlotte 49ers. He helped coach up for Gamecock O’Mega Blake to an all-conference season this fall. Now, he is taking his coaching talents to Western Kentucky.
On Tuesday, Barnes and Western Kentucky announced their partnership. He will take over for former receivers coach Zak Mizell on head coach Tyson Helton’s Hilltoppers staff. Barnes has hit the ground running, including in his social media announcement an appeal for transfer portal pass catchers to join him at WKU.

Prior to this move to Bowling Green, Kentucky, Barnes was in Charlotte for two years. He was an off-field assistant in 2023 before being promoted to full-time duty in 2024. He also had earlier coaching stints at Georgia Military, Bridgewater College, and Dutch Fork High School near Columbia.
During his South Carolina football days, Barnes was a five-year player for legendary head coach Steve Spurrier. As a Gamecock, he reeled in 64 catches for 778 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Both of his scores were big as they came in a tough and close road win against the Ole Miss Rebels back in 2008. After graduating, Barnes had a brief professional career with stops in the NFL (San Diego Chargers) and CFL (Winnipeg Blue Bombers).
