South Carolina football offers rising freshman DB after standout camp showing

South Carolina football hosted another Shane Beamer Football camp on Monday, this time a 7-on-7 camp. Heading into the showcase, class of 2029 athlete Coron Russell, Jr. was on the Gamecock staff’s collective radar. As the workout went on, the interest grew. Then, Russell announced on Monday afternoon that USC had offered him a scholarship.
South Carolina is his fifth overall power conference scholarship offer. The Gamecocks join Michigan, Syracuse, Penn State, Missouri, and several smaller schools on his offer list. That group is certain to grow over the next several years.
A product of Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia, Russell told GamecockCentral that he felt “great” about his newest offer.

Russell worked out as a defensive back and receiver, and South Carolina’s defensive staff seemed to like the idea of him playing in the secondary. Because he hasn’t made it to high school yet, most of his film is of him out-athleting offensive linemen as a defensive end at the middle school level. The move to defensive back and receiver for his 7-on-7 team is new but seems to be working out for him.

For his age, Russell has nice size. Already listed at 6-2 and 185 pounds, he certainly looks like he could grow into the type of secondary player that defensive backs coach/defensive passing game coordinator Torrian Gray likes to deploy as part of his unit.
With four full years of high school ahead of him, there is a long way to go in his recruitment. That is also true about his physical and skill development. However, the Gamecocks have gotten involved early, something that could only be a good thing for their future chances.
