Four-star South Carolina football QB target sets commitment date

South Carolina football offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Shula has the Gamecocks in on several quarterbacks in the class of 2027. One name to watch is Valdosta, Georgia native Jayce Johnson. The Lowndes High School product is a consensus top 65 national prospect and a four-star recruit. On Tuesday, he trimmed his final list and revealed he is nearing a decision. Ahead of Johnson’s new August 3rd commitment date, South Carolina made his top five.
Joining the Gamecocks on his list are the Tennessee Volunteers, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Florida State Seminoles, and Texas A&M Aggies. South Carolina joined the party with an offer during an unofficial visit this April. It was the most recent offer of the five teams on Johnson’s list of favorites.

Johnson last visited the Gamecocks this spring but has taken trips to Tallahassee, Knoxville, and College Station since then. Both Tennessee and Florida State have been recently labeled as teams making major pushes during his recruitment. The 6-3 dual-threat quarterback is coming off an unofficial visit to Texas A&M this past weekend.

On3’s industry ranking considers Johnson as the No. 50 overall prospect in the 2027 class. He’s also No. 5 nationally among quarterbacks and No. 6 in the talent-rich state of Georgia. With two more years of high school ball remaining, he has plenty of room for improvement, an impressive notion considering how talented he already is.
In addition to Johnson, South Carolina has also offered six other quarterbacks in the 2027 cycle. Four-star Alabama native Trent Seaborn has been the most public-facing of these offers, and the Gamecocks own the On3 RPM lead in his recruitment.
