On Wednesday, four-star South Carolina football commitment J’Zavien Currence had an announcement for Gamecock fans. Posting on social media, the Rock Hill native said his recruitment is “officially shut down.” The top 100 overall prospect in the class of 2026 will stay in the Palmetto State with USC.

Though the news was welcome for the garnet and black faithful, it wasn’t a surprise. Currence has been all in with the Gamecocks since his pledge last fall. In fact, the talented defensive back told GamecockCentral following his official visit in June that “this is where I’m going…South Carolina.”

During that official visit to Columbia, Currence put on his recruiter hat. He was in the ear of fellow top 100 defensive back and close friend Samari Matthews and other big-time talents. Priority quarterback target Landon Duckworth was back in town for an unofficial visit, and still uncommitted official visitors Darius Gray (five-star offensive lineman), Tamarion Watkins (four-star safety), and Somourian Wingo (four-star receiver) were on campus, as well. In-state talent Sequel Patterson (four-star athlete/receiver) visited, too, and he pledged his services to South Carolina last week.

As a player, Currence is a rare combination of “ready to play now” and “high developmental upside.” Physically, he already looks the part at 6-3 and 210 pounds. However, his explosive athleticism and study habits as a player indicate that he can continue improving in a major way once he arrives on campus.

The On3 industry ranking considers Currence to be the No. 99 overall player in the 2026 cycle. He’s also No. 8 nationally among safeties and No. 1 in South Carolina. He is the highest-rated player in the class according to two of the four major recruiting services.

South Carolina’s 2026 recruiting haul ranks 21st nationally with just nine players committed in that class. Both of those numbers could improve soon as several key Gamecock targets are expected to announce their college decisions over the next couple of weeks.
