South Carolina receiver target wins state title, sets Gamecock OV

It’s going to be an exciting month for South Carolina football target Carmelo Taylor.
The four-star class of 2023 wide receiver from Roanoke (Va.) Patrick Henry has not only seen his recruitment explode this spring but also took home the 5A state championship in the 100-meter dash on Saturday.
The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder, who landed an offer from Justin Stepp and the Gamecocks this past week, was originally going to take an unofficial visit on June 20 but has now locked in an official visit to South Carolina for the weekend of June 10.

Taylor was listed as one of On3’s top risers this spring as he landed offers from South Carolina, Penn State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia over the past few weeks.
“The attention comes with good reason,” On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power said. “Taylor is an explosive vertical threat who blows by opposing cornerbacks. His speed was validated on the track this spring. Taylor consistently posted sub-11.0 second times in the 100 meters with a personal best of 10.59 seconds.”
The On3 Consensus – a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies – ranks Taylor as the No. 46 wide receiver and No. 309 overall prospect in the country as well as the No. 5 prospect in Virginia.

The Gamecocks quickly shot to the top of the list in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, which uses industry predictions, visit data, and much more on an AI platform to provide odds a prospect will pick a particular school. But that number is likely skewed at this time since it’s not yet known what other official visits Taylor will take.
What is known is that he’s quickly become a priority target to watch for the Gamecocks.
South Carolina kicked off a busy month of its own Saturday with the first of 10 high school camp days on campus where the Gamecocks will welcome prospects from across the country.
That June 10 weekend is setting up to be one of two major official visit weekends for the Gamecocks.
