On Tuesday, New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore announced that former South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler would be the team’s starter in week one. The Saints will play the Arizona Cardinals, a team he led a game-winning drive against this preseason.

Last season, Rattler started six of the final seven games for the Saints. However, with the organization drafting Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round, many assumed Shough would be handed the keys to the franchise. Rattler outplayed Shough this preseason and had a great showing during summer training camp.

Playing on a struggling team with arguably the worst offensive line in football in 2024, Rattler didn’t post tremendous stats as a rookie. Still, he had some good moments when given time to throw.

The Saints will take on the Cardinals at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 7th. CBS will broadcast the contest, while Paramount+ makes it available via streaming.

During his South Carolina football career, Spencer Rattler posted two of the best statistical seasons in Gamecock history.

In 2022, he led the Gamecocks to an 8-4 regular season record that included back-to-back top 10 wins over Tennessee and Clemson, keeping both orange rivals out of the College Football Playoff. He threw for over 3000 yards and set a single-game record with six touchdown tosses against the Vols.

As a senior in 2023, he helped wideout Xavier Legette break out and become an All-American. That year, Rattler threw for over 3000 yards again. He joined Todd Ellis as the only Gamecock signal-callers to reach that threshold twice.

The Saints selected Rattler in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Following the draft, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer lauded New Orleans for the pick. “I think [the Saints] are getting a guy with a huge upside,” he said. “[He is a] fantastic person.”
