South Carolina suffers first post-regular season transfer portal defection

South Carolina football fans are still celebrating a win over the rival Clemson Tigers and are holding onto hope that the College Football Playoff Selection Committee views the Gamecocks worthy of inclusion in the 12-team CFP field.
However, if USC makes the new-look College Football Playoff, they will be without at least one player.

On Sunday, less than 24 hours after the Palmetto Bowl victory, a Gamecock reserve announced his intention to transfer.
Ni Mansell, a reserve walk-on offensive lineman, announced that he will enter the transfer portal. He spent two years with the South Carolina football program but didn’t see game action. Mansell was a former starter at guard for Mercer and will look to spend his sixth year elsewhere.

While the move doesn’t have much impact on the 2024 Gamecocks, it is the first of what is sure to be several portal defections.

During the season, rotational linebacker Bangally Kamara elected to transfer. The former Pittsburgh Panther will use his final year of eligibility with the Kansas Jayhawks. Kamara was the first portal player to publicly commit to a new school following the start of the 2024 season. While most players have to wait for the transfer window to open, Kamara was a graduate, meaning he could transfer at any time.
The official transfer portal window does not open until December 9th. That is the day after the College Football Playoff Selection Sunday show. There will be some graduate movement before that date, and some players will announce their plans to leave their current schools, but nothing can become official (and, theoretically, no contact can be made) for underclassmen until the window opens.
