Gamecock uniform report for South Carolina-Coastal Carolina

Last season, South Carolina wore a number of uniform combinations, not repeating one until the 11th game of the year. The 2025 Gamecocks have repeated just once. On Saturday, as they return home for an in-state contest against Coastal Carolina and their first game in Williams-Brice Stadium since October, Shane Beamer’s team will don a look they haven’t worn in a long time.

According to a Saturday morning post from the South Carolina football social media team, the Gamecocks will wear their garnet helmets against Coastal Carolina. The garnet lids will feature the white circle and classic Block C. USC will wear a black facemask for the game.

Fire. Ants. South Carolina will wear its all-garnet look, rocking garnet helmets, garnet jerseys, and garnet pants for the first time since 2018. That season, the Gamecocks beat the Missouri Tigers, 37-35, in a thriller wearing the combination. The “Michael Scarnecchia Game” saw the backup quarterback fill in for an injured Jake Bentley in a virtual monsoon in Columbia. After Scarnecchia’s three-touchdown day, Parker White hit the game-winning field goal in the final minute.

The nickname “Fire Ants” stems from the 1980s defenses that wore garnet and swarmed to the football like, well, fire ants. The 1984 “Black Magic” season typically saw Carolina—at home—wear all garnet or garnet helmets with black jerseys and white pants, hence the origins of the two famous nicknames.

South Carolina has never worn all garnet under head coach Shane Beamer. In fact, the 2018 Missouri contest is the only time the combination has been worn in decades.

This season, Carolina has lost both of its games wearing garnet helmets, including last week’s debacle at Texas A&M. USC is 1-3 in garnet jerseys in 2025 and 1-1 in garnet pants.

Kickoff for the Coastal Carolina game will be at 4:15 p.m. SEC Network will handle the broadcast, while the ESPN app will make the action available via streaming.

Neither South Carolina nor Coastal has been ranked in some time. The Gamecocks fell out of the rankings back in September, while the Chanticleers have not entered the top 25 since 2022.

BetMGM lists South Carolina as a 24.5-point favorite for Saturday’s matchup.
