Spencer Rattler has unique connections to both Super Bowl QBs

South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler has unique connections to both starting quarterbacks in Sunday’s Super Bowl LVII.
Rattler’s marketing agent Chris Cabott of Steinberg Sports & Entertainment represents Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Rattler has been studying the former MVP QB for years.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts’ one year at Oklahoma overlapped with that of Rattler, who was a true freshman during Hurts’ senior campaign.

Needless to say, like most of the country, Rattler will be dialed in to the game, which will be played in his home state of Arizona on Sunday evening.
“I think it’s going to be a really great game,” Rattler said Tuesday during the GC Takeover Hour on 107.5 The Game. “It’s cool how it’s the first Super Bowl where it’s two Black quarterbacks facing each other with Mahomes and Jalen Hurts.
“I’ve got much respect for Mahomes, and he’s amazing — the best in the league — but I kinda want to see Jalen Hurts win out because that’s my guy. I texted him the other day and said, ‘Hey, man, go get your ring. It’s already written’ and he hit me back, so we stay in contact throughout the year, which is pretty cool, so I definitely want to see him succeed knowing what he’s gone through. Being 16- or 17-1 this year, it’s super impressive and I want to see him go out there and win.”

Rattler’s game and playstyle — namely his ability to make off-platform throws from multiple arm angles — has been compared to Mahomes, who essentially invented that style, or at least was the first to successfully bring it to the NFL.

“I’ve definitely been studying and trying to do what Mahomes has done for a long time I feel like,” Rattler said. “I got to see his tape at (Texas) Tech when I was at my last school obviously. Seeing what he’s done in the league, it’s so impressive, him being one of the first guys to do all of the off-balance throws and make it cool but also make it real where you can actually do this in a game. He’s doing it every game, so just his competition, his fire he plays with, his swag, I like how he plays.”
Likewise, Rattler says he has learned from Hurts, particularly in taking cues from his preparation while getting a front row seat of that for a year.
“And then obviously getting to play with Jalen Hurts and seeing just how he leads and how he works, that’s helped me a lot,” Rattler said. “Seeing how he can be such a dynamic player running the ball as well. That’s something I want to do a little more.”
Mahomes is seeking his second Super Bowl victory while an Eagles win would mean the first of Hurts’ young career.
The Chiefs and Eagles are set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff Sunday on Fox.
