VIDEO: Justin Stepp breaks down 'the DK play' in Gamecocks' win over Vandy

The South Carolina Gamecocks threw four touchdowns in last week’s 38-27 victory at Vanderbilt and easily one of the best plays in that game was Antwane Wells Jr.’s 68-yard catch-and-run for touchdown from Dakereon Joyner.
South Carolina wide receivers coach Justin Stepp detailed several of the Gamecocks’ big passing plays in the film room on South Carolina’s new Gamecocks+ streaming service with a snippet from that session also getting posted on Twitter.
What was already a fascinating play design on the surface — the Gamecocks started out with Joyner at quarterback then shifted both him and running back Christian Beal-Smith to the right, then direct snapped the ball to Beal-Smith who handed it to Joyner who then essentially did an orbit motion before buying time to throw the pass — became even more interesting with Stepp’s added commentary and context.

As has already been mentioned this week, the play was initially designed to go to Josh Vann on a deep post, but Joyner with his quarterback background sees that Vandy has it covered well, senses the pressure and buys some time, then finds Wells who had just worked his way back across the field in the scramble drill scenario.

After Wells catches it, he gets a block from several teammates including tight end Austin Stogner.
As Stepp points out, offensive lineman Jovaughn Gywn can be seen sprinting 50-plus yards down field trying to find a block to help.
“The funny thing is, you could actually hear Stogner on the sideline going, ‘Follow me, follow me, follow me!” Stepp said. “He’s telling Juice where to go. …”

South Carolina (6-3 straight up, 5-4 against the spread) bounced back from a home loss to Missouri by capturing a 38-27 win at Vanderbilt last week. The Gamecocks covered the spread as 6.5-point road favorites and improved to 3-3 in SEC play.
