Gamecocks closing in on veteran OL coach hire
South Carolina is closing in on hiring veteran offensive line coach Randy Clements, GamecockCentral.com has learned.
A proposed contract for Clements will need to be approved by USC’s Board of Trustees. A Board meeting has been set for Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m., with multiple athletics personnel agreements on the agenda.
GamecockCentral.com previously reported on Clements’ strong candicacy for the job including a members-only update on Wednesday morning.
Clements, who currently serves as an assistant offensive line coach at TCU, has a lengthy history working with Kendal Briles, who’s expected to be the Gamecocks’ next offensive coordinator in Columbia.
The pair were at Baylor together from 2008 until 2016, then had stops at Houston (2018) and Florida State (2019).
Clements began his coaching career at his alma mater, Stephen F. Austin. He’s also made stops at Houston, Baylor, Southeastern, FSU, Ole Miss, North Texas, and North Carolina.

He’s been a part of offenses that have put up big numbers over the course of his career. From 2010 until 2020, nine offenses that Clements worked for ranked in the top 13 nationally.
At Baylor, Clements was the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from from 2008 until 2011. Over the course of the next five seasons, he was the run game coordinator and offensive line coach and produced the Big 12’s Offensive Lineman of the Year in four straight seasons.
Under Clements, his offensive linemen combined for 13 all-conference accolades and six All-American recognitions. He coached eight linemen who were selected in the NFL Draft, including first-rounders in 2009 and 2011.
Before beginning his college coaching career, Clements was the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and head powerlifting coach at Stephenville High in Texas.
