South Carolina slugger Ethan Petry comes off the board in MLB Draft

After three strong seasons at South Carolina, Ethan Petry has been picked in the MLB Draft. The junior slugger was selected with the 49th overall pick by the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
The slot value for the 49th pick in the draft is a little shy of $2 million at $1,984,200.
Petry didn’t take long to explode onto the scene in a freshman season where he hit .376 and broke the South Carolina freshman record for both home runs (23) and RBI (75). He made the All-SEC First Team and Freshman Team, along with being named an All-American by many baseball outlets.
His success at the plate continued into 2024 as he hit .306 with 21 homers and 53 RBI as a sophomore. In his junior season with the program, Petry hit .321 with 10 homers and 34 RBI. He only played in 44 games, missing some time towards the end of the year due to an injury.

Overall, Petry slashed .336/.462/.661 and hit 54 homers with 162 RBI in 168 games at South Carolina.
With Petry all but certainly gone, South Carolina will have a glaring hole to fill in 2026. The Gamecocks finished the 2025 campaign 28-29 (6-24 SEC) and had a losing record for the second time in four seasons. Head coach Paul Mainieri will be back for his second season at the helm next year.
South Carolina is set to have an entirely new outfield next season. The Gamecocks added three transfer outfielders (Tyler Bak, Ethan Lizama, Luke Yuhasz) as well as Aaron Jamison from the JUCO ranks and Brandon Cromer Jr. in their high school recruiting class.
