South Carolina women's basketball: Rapid Reaction - NC Central

South Carolina routed NC Central 106-42 in a sloppy game on Sunday. Here’s what stood out from the game.

– South Carolina didn’t need Tessa Johnson (illness) or Agot Makeer (concussion protocol) to beat NC Central, but it was a missed opportunity to get needed game experience for the bench.

The reserves got plenty of playing time, which was a good thing. But they were put in different situations than they would normally be in, which reduced the learning opportunity.

It was also troubling that Adhel Tac, who got the start, and Maryam Dauda didn’t do more against the undersized Eagles. Tac had just two points and three rebounds. Dauda had six points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

– Maddy McDaniel and Ayla McDowell were much more productive. McDaniel had eight points, all on free throws, three rebounds, and three assists. She appears to be getting back into game shape after her injury and suspension.

McDowell saw her playing time increase the most, playing 27 minutes. She scored 16 points on 5-7 from three, showing the three-point shooting that Dawn Staley has been saying she sees in practice.

– Ta’Niya Latson had to play 35 minutes because of the short bench, but it was still good for her to find her shooting stroke, especially after she started the game 1-6 from the floor. She then made 10-12 and went 5-5 from three.

Latson reminds me a little of Zia Cooke in that she needs to see the ball go in the basket early. She does more than Cooke did and is better at manufacturing points, but you still want her knocking down shots.

At Florida State, if Latson missed a few shots early, it didn’t matter because she had to keep shooting. But this season, when Latson has gotten off to a slow start, she has started deferring more, and it’s been hard to get her shooting as much as she should.
