Spencer Rattler turning heads early at Saints training camp

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. Spencer Rattler is continuing to shine with the New Orleans Saints.
Just a week into NFL training camp, the former South Carolina quarterback is carrying the momentum he created during rookie minicamp and OTAs.
According to reports, on Saturday, Rattler ran with the second team. Despite throwing an early incompletion, he began to get hot and went 7-of-9 on the day through the air in team periods. That included a 40-yard touchdown pass and a 25-yard completion.

“He’s really talented. His arm talent is off the charts,” Saints wide receiver Chris Olave said of Rattler. “He’s going to be real good. I want to see him in action but from my first impression he’s going to be a really good player.”

While it’s still early, several reports coming out of New Orleans have indicated that Rattler is battling it out with 2023 fourth-round draft pick Jake Haener for the Saints’ backup quarterback spot. Veteran quarterback Derek Carr is entering his second season with the franchise, and his 11th in the NFL, and is the presumed starter heading into the 2024 season.

The more I see people drooling over what Rattler is doing with the Saints the more I wonder what’s so surprising? People act like Willy the janitor replaced him at Oklahoma. No. The reality is a QB, who went on to win the Heisman and was the No.1 overall pick, won the job against him. Rattler regrouped and got better at South Carolina with a former NFL offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, despite injuries occurring all around him.
It’s only gonna be a matter of time until Rattler is the starter down in New Orleans and no one in Columbia is gonna be surprised.
