In an era where some players are quick to jump ship to make their path to earn playing time easier, South Carolina State transfer Jawarn Howell is doing the opposite.

Joining a talented and deep running back room at South Carolina, Howell is embracing the opportunity to compete as a Gamecock in the SEC.

“With a competitive running back room, it wasn’t a hard decision for me (to come to South Carolina) because I’m big on competitiveness,” said Howell. “I’m gonna work to get to where I want to be. I’m not shy from working.”

Standing at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds Howell was standout as a true freshman this past season for former Gamecock assistant coach Buddy Pough and SC State. Rushing for 809 yards and seven touchdowns on 102 carries he also finished the year with ten catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns. With three years of eligibility remaining, Howell has the tools, and the time, to grow into a dominate running back for South Carolina.

“It’s exciting to me because you have all this chemistry and all this wisdom in the room that you can learn from. I can say I’m already learning from (our other running backs). It’s a competitive nature around (here) to come to work with these guys because every day you’re going to get better. You’re forced to get better every day.”

Howell is one of three transfer running backs that South Carolina added this offseason. He joins Arkansas transfer Rocket Sanders and North Texas transfer Oscar Adaway. The Gamecocks also signed Matthew Fuller, the No.13 running back for the class of 2024, to go along with returning scholarship backs Juju McDowell and Djay Braswell.

“It’s my goal to play at the next level and that’s the NFL. I feel like if you can play in the SEC, that’s the highest it can get in college football. Also, the coaching staff and the resources they have. It’s gonna help you reach that next level and reach your maximum capability of yourself as you grow as player and as a person.”
