Shane Beamer press conference following South Carolina's spring game

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer met with the media following Saturday’s annual Garnet & Black Spring Game.

Below is a quick summary of what Beamer had to say, as he shared his thoughts on the game, the spring as a whole, and a look ahead to what’s next for this team.

– Beamer opens up by thanking the fans for coming out tonight and creating a great atmosphere with so many recruits in attendance. Adds that he can’t wait to get back out there on Aug. 31 for Week 1.

– Beamer jokingly shares that Nyck Harbor is mad at him that he wouldn’t let him play today. Harbor ran the third fastest 100m time in program history (10.12); a new PR for him as well. He also finished second in the 200m today.

– There were a lot of veteran players who wanted to go play in the second half. Love their competitiveness

Injury Report: TJ Sanders rolled his ankle on the first play of the game, Markee Anderson’s back locked up on him during warm ups. Doesn’t think either injuries are anything serious.

– A lot of players will be back in May to train. Summer school starts in June.

– Thought LaNorris Sellers was “really, really good” tonight. Said he’s had a good spring practice and tonight he looked “poised.” Thought he operated the offense well and ran when the holes were there.

– Thought all the running backs did some good things, including the walk-ons. Says Braswell has home run ability because of speed but there’s so much more about it than just running the ball. He does some good things in pass pro and as a pass catcher, things that they’re looking for out of that room

– What we saw tonight defensively is how they’ve looked all spring. They’ve athletic and have the ability to be flexible with personal. Mentions that the size and depth on defensive is noticeably different.

– Beamer says EDGE Bryan Thomas Jr. has done a great job all spring and did a good of causing disruption. Says Thomas embraces his skillset knowing that he has to add pass rush moves and has to disrupt the run game. “He’s certainly taken a step.”

– In the 1Q, there was a couple who proposal in the ending at Williams-Brice. Later on, Beamer ran over to them to congratulate them. Didn’t want to run over there too soon because he didn’t want to steal their moment but calls it pretty cool that they think that highly of this place and during that game to do that.

– S&C coach Luke Day made a comment to Beamer recently that there’s certain guys who are highly recruited who come in and are just ready to go. Says Dylan Stewart is one of those guys. There was an adjustment for him at first in the weight room but on the field, he’s been ready since he got here. He doesn’t say much and is the same guy every day. Is very pleased with him.

– They’ve been banged up on the OL this spring so they haven’t had the continuity they would’ve liked but felt that the OL did a good job at times tonight. Losing Markee Anderson didn’t help the “Black Team,” because he was expected to start for them.

– They’re old on the DL but they’re young on the OL. OL have had their moments but says they’ll be better for it in the long run.

– They aren’t ready to name a starting QB yet. They’ll evaluate all 15 practices from this spring at some point.

– Likes the energy. Felt like they had that same energy in 2021. There’s a great hunger about this team starting with the returning guys. They are focused on finishing better than last season. You combine those players with the new players and it’s created a close team.

– Excited for the former players who are getting ready for the NFL Draft. He’s received a lot of calls from NFL teams and the first thing that he’s really proud to be able to tell teams is that they’re all great people. With Legette, he shares that on Thursday he was at USC at 6 a.m. working out with the team’s staff. On Friday, he was back in there.
