Shane Beamer provides update on South Carolina football through 12 spring practices - 4/16/24

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer met with the media Tuesday to provide an update on how spring football practices are going for the Gamecocks.

Below is a quick summary of what Beamer had to say following practice No.12. South Carolina will return to the field Thursday morning for practice No.13.

– Will do a draft on Thursday night with their players as they divide into two teams for the spring game. Wants to make it fun for the guys but they want to make it competitive as well. Guys really bought into how they did it last year.

– They’ll be a bunch of recruits in attendance on Saturday. He encourages fans to come out for the game to show them what playing at Williams-Brice is all about.

– Got about 80 plays in this past Saturday in their second scrimmage. QBs were live for about a quarter of the action. Felt the OL did a good job. Loved the energy and the competitiveness.

– DB Zahbari Sandy tore his ACL on Saturday. Says he’s doubtful that he’ll be able to return in time for the end of the season.

– Will have a better idea by tomorrow on who won’t be playing in the game on Saturday. “We’ll see.” Adds that there were some guys who were back out there today at practice who haven’t been in action the past few practices.

– With the transfer portal open, he’s looking to see who can help the team. They have a target number of guys on scholarship at certain positions. Mentions they are under at OL and WR. Looks at it this way because it can help them from a depth standpoint.

– Puts a good amount of stock into how guys perform in a spring game vs how much they did in the previous 14 practices in spring. Some coaches don’t look at it that way but Beamer says he does because it allows him to see how guys respond when they’re playing in front of a crowd. Mentions that for some of those players, it’ll be the largest crowd they’ve ever played in front before.

– No timetable on when USC will announce a starting QB. Shares that like with any position, they’ll asset after the spring game. From his experiences at other schools, that could carry well into fall camp.

– Will be dividing the coaching staff up into two teams. Not sure if Dowell Loggains (OC) and Clayton White (DC) will call plays for both teams (Loggains both offenses, White both defenses) but that’s what they did last year.

– Calls a spring game a great recruiting tool when you’re able to have a great crowd to show recruits what the atmosphere is like. But he wouldn’t say that’s what it’s only about. It’s a good chance for him and the staff to watch the players and see what they can do as well as give fans an opportunity to see new players perform.

– Beamer will meet with every players starting at 7 a.m. on Monday for about 15 minutes each. Players will also meet with their positional coach. Calls it a good chance to not only get a pulse on how players are feeling about their roles while it also gives the coaching staff a chance to be honest with each player on with they stand.
