Shane Beamer provides update on South Carolina football through six spring practices - 4/2/24

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer met with the media Tuesday to provide an update on how spring football practices are going for the Gamecocks.

Below is a quick summary of what Beamer had to say following practice No.6. South Carolina will return to the field Thursday morning for practice No.7.

– Beamer opens by sharing that the team had a good practice this morning after having the past few days off for Easter break. A lot of situational football. Good tempo with high energy.

INJURY NOTE: Bradley Dunn will be out for the rest of the spring with an ankle injury. Nothing major but just shutting him down.

– They’ll hold their first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday (closed to the public/media).

– Looking for guys to be able to go out their on Saturday in the scrimmage without having a coach on the field with them. They’ll have SEC officials out there and they’ll have live tackling. An opportunity to see how guys respond

– On the transition of special teams coordinators: there’s been a learning curve, whether it be on techniques or what they call techniques/plays. Beamer says they’ve been “marrying” phrases that DeCamillis likes to use with the ones that they’ve used in the past — if Beamer likes it. But makes it clear that he brought DeCamillis in to do a job and he’s been able to run it the way he wants. Meeting are intense and players are learning a lot with the videos of clips he shows from guys he coached in the NFL doing the same techniques they’re teaching.

– Wouldn’t say there’s been separation at QB but believes they’ll be separation on Saturday in the first scrimmage and hopes there is. A game-like setting, looking to see can guys run the offense, handle the pressure in different situations, and protect the football.

– Not sure yet if QBs will be live on Saturday. In the past, there’s been time where some QBs have been live. Will have that conversation this week with the coaching staff.

– The decision to move on from Kelton Henderson was USC’s decision, says Beamer. Says there’s a certain standard that they felt like he wasn’t living up to but wishes him well and will help him out if he can.

– While WR Nyck Harbor isn’t practicing this spring, since he’s running track, he continues to show up at the ops building when he can. Beamer shares that Harbor watched practice today and when his schedule allows it, he attends meetings. Adds that it’s not a surprise to see him around in the building. Harbor continues to put work in on his own with the QBs/WRs as he’s made it clear to Beamer that he wants to be a great football player while also chasing his dreams in track & field.
