Spring ball is a chance for South Carolina to take advantage of not having a game to prepare for and focus on some things the Gamecocks didn’t do well last season.

They’ve done that already. And Shane Beamer said that’s going to be a focal point as South Carolina wraps practice this week.

“Thursday will be more four-minute, end-of-the-game offense. We have to finish out the game and get a first down,” Beamer said. “We were crap at that last year. In some games, we had a chance to put the game away and weren’t able to.”

The goal of a four-minute offense is to milk the clock while also picking up a first down primarily running the ball.

South Carolina’s run game last season was streaky and caused some tense end-of-game moments for the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks beat both Texas A&M and Clemson this season. But each team had a chance to get the ball back and win the game because South Carolina couldn’t pick up a first down.

The Aggies didn’t do a ton on their final drive while Clemson fumbled the punt return, immediately giving it back to South Carolina to win the game.

It’s something South Carolina has to do better on both sides of the ball.

“Clemson in the fourth quarter I thnk we punted three times. Texas A&M, we had a first and goal up nine with a minute and a half left in the game and ended up giving the ball back to A&M on the six-yard line with a minute to play,” Beamer said.

“We have to be better offensively putting games away. We’ll work on that Thursday. That’s also the defense getting the ball back. When we’re losing on defense, we have to get the ball back for our offense as well.”

The Gamecocks just finished spring practice No. 10 of 15 total. The next time they’re on the field is Thursday morning.

Tuesday’s practice focused on situational two-minute work with good-on-good reps. South Carolina has meetings and weight lifting Wednesday before Thursday’s practice.

Players and coaches get Easter weekend–Friday, Saturday and Sunday–off before heading back to the practice field next week.

South Carolina practices Tuesday, Thursday and Friday before the fourth and final practice Saturday night in the form of the Garnet and Black spring game.

That kicks off April 15 at 7 p.m. ET.

“It’s going to be an amazing environment across the street. It’s the first time we’ve been back in Williams-Brice since the Tennessee game last season,” Beamer said. “We know how awesome that was. It’s been too long, Gamecock Nation, and looking forward to seeing all of you back at Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday night.”
