When Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello met with the media Thursday morning to preview this weekend’s series at Auburn, he gave the latest injury update on third baseman Billy Amick.

The slugger will likely remain out this weekend when the Vols take on the Tigers.

“Billy will probably be out this weekend, but every day I’m like, ‘what are you doing dude?’ And he says, ‘I have permission to do this,’” Vitello laughed on Thursday. “So, he’s about as ambitious as you can imagine, wanting to get back out there. He’ll travel with the team, but I don’t know that he will be active.”

Volquest reported last Tuesday that third baseman Billy Amick would miss the Tennessee Tech game with an appendix injury but that the situation was not considered to be long-term. The expectation was that Amick would miss a couple of more games as well, so this is not unexpected.

Vitello made the initial injury comment on Amick’s situation on last Monday night’s edition of Vol Calls.

“He’s got a little something that popped up with him too,” the coach said of his third baseman. “I’ll leave it up to the training staff and the doctors – I don’t think there’s anything crazy with him, but he might be in a position where we might have to find a way to win a game or two without him too.”

Amick, who transferred to Tennessee via the portal during the offseason, has been fantastic for the Vols in 2024. The third baseman has started in all 25 games he’s played in and launched a grand slam in his final at-bat in game three’s 15-4 win over Ole Miss on March 24 – the last game he appeared in. Amick drove in five runs in the ballgame.

The junior is tied with Christian Moore, Blake Burke and Dylan Dreiling with a team-high 10 home runs and is currently third on the squad with a .367 clip at the plate. Amick is tied for third on the team with outfielder Kavares Tears with 26 RBI. Both trail Dylan Dreiling and freshman Dean Curley, who have driven in 37 and 27 runs, respectively. Amick is also second in slugging percentage (.789) and has made just two errors in the field at the hot corner.
