Rece Davis, Pete Thamel make picks on GameDay podcast

Earlier this week ESPN College GameDay host Rece Davis and ESPN College Football reporter Pete Thamel made their picks for Tennessee-Georgia on the ESPN College GameDay podcast, using a 3.5-point spread with the Vols as the underdog.

Thamel went with Tennessee while Davis picked Georgia.

“I just have too many questions about Georgia — questions about their offense,” Thamel said. “I think their defense is good, but not the elite, elite, elite defense we remember there.

“And I have visceral memories, Rece, standing on the sideline with you watching those games at Neyland when it’s a cauldron of desperation. They really want to end this snide against Georgia. So I’m taking the fighting Aguilars.”

“We’ll see if Georgia can escape the cauldron that is Rocky Top,” Davis said.

ESPN’s College GameDay in Knoxville for 12th time

ESPN College GameDay was in Knoxville for the 12th time in the show’s history, dating back to its first trip to Tennessee in September 1995. That appearance was the only other time the show was at Tennessee for a Georgia game.

GameDay has been at Tennessee for six Florida games (1996, 2000, 2002, 2012, 2016 and 2022) as well as games against Alabama (2022), Auburn (2004), Miami (2002), Notre Dame (1999) and Georgia (1995).

Tennessee is 2-0 with GameDay in Knoxville during the Josh Heupel era, beating Florida 38-33 in September 2022 and Alabama 52-49 in October 2022.

Both Thamel and Davis had high praise for Tennessee crowds at previous College GameDay stops in Knoxville.

“I would say it’s the best SEC crowd in my three-plus years on GameDay,” Thamel said.

“Every crowd we go to is really good,” Davis added. “I would say Tennessee probably does set the standard in the SEC for GameDay crowds.”
