Jahmai Mashack is still with the Memphis Grizzlies, despite seven-team trade news

Jahmai Mashack has not been traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Golden State Warriors, despite ESPN’s report Sunday of the seven-team trade that had Mashack with the Warriors. 

ESPN’s Sham Charania reported that Mashack was part of the seven-team trade that also included the Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves. 

The seven-team deal had to become official before the trade between the Grizzlies and Warriors, made during the second round of the NBA Draft on June 26, could then become official. 

Memphis got Mashack with the No. 59 overall pick as well as a protected second-round pick while Golden State traded up to No. 56 to get Florida guard Will Richard.

‘I’ve always wanted to be and strived to be a winner’

On draft night Mashack was selected by Houston but traded to the Grizzlies, via the Warriors. Mashack had an introductory press conference in Memphis on June 26.

“I’m excited because I’ve always been about winning,” Mashack said at the time, “and I’ve always wanted to be and strived to be a winner and I think that fits what they’re trying to do, as well.”

In the seven-team trade that became official Sunday, Phoenix acquired the most players, getting Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming, Koby Brea, Daeqwon Plowden and a second-round pick. 

Houston got Kevin Durant and Clint Capela and Brooklyn got two second-round picks. 

Golden State got Mashack, who was later traded to Memphis for Richard at No. 56, and Alex Toohey. Atlanta got a second-round swap, David Roddy and cash, the Lakers got Adou Theiro and Minnesota got Rocco Zikarsky, two second-round picks and cash.

The Grizzlies beat the Oklahoma City Thunder Saturday, in the first day of the NBA Summer League in Utah, but Mashack did not play.

The 6-foot-4, 202-pound Fontana, Calif., native, was considered one of the best perimeter defenders in college basketball last season while averaging 6.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 38 games as a senior with the Vols. 

Mashack averaged 4.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 137 games at Tennessee over the last four seasons. He left the Vols tied with Zakai Zeigler for the most wins (109) for a four-year player in men’s basketball program history. 

He also appeared in the most NCAA Tournament wins (9) and tournament games (13) in program history and set the program record for total steals (18) and single-game steals (5) in NCAA Tournament games. 

“Mashack was the best defensive player in college basketball this year,” The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie wrote of Mashack in his NBA Draft profile, “and might be one of the best perimeter defenders on the planet right now. This is not an exaggeration.”
