Tennessee Baseball drops in national polls following first series-loss of season

Tennessee dropped back-to-back games in mid-March but this past weekend’s series-loss to Texas A&M was the first of the year for the Volunteers. The Aggies were no-hit in Friday’s series-opener before sweeping a Saturday doubleheader by a combined score of 26-9 in Southeastern Conference play.
With the series loss, Tennessee (28-2, 9-3 SEC) dropped four spots down to No. 5 in this week’s updated D1 Baseball poll. That’s the poll this website uses for rankings and the Vols previously held the top-spot for most of the past month.
Arkansas (30-3) took over the No. 1 spot in the poll with Texas (26-4) jumping three spots to No. 2. LSU (30-3) is back in the top-five at No. 3, up four spots from last week, while Clemson (30-5) moved up two slots to No. 4.
Checking in behind Tennessee at No. 6 is Ole Miss (24-7), who hosts the Vols this weekend in Oxford for a three-game series. Georgia (29-5) slid back four spots to No. 7 after going 1-3 on the week after being swept by the Longhorns in Austin. Oregon State (22-7) is up three spots to No. 8. Florida State slid down five spots to No. 9 after dropping a home series to Wake Forest. UCLA joined the top-10 this week, jumping up four spots following the 3-1 week.
Baseball America pits the Vols at No. 4 this week. Perfect Game slid Tennessee down from the top-slot to No. 5. The Vols also moved down to No. 4 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has yet to release its updated poll this week.

With this weekend’s series-loss to Texas A&M, it’s the first time the Vols have dropped back-to-back SEC contests since losing in consecutive days at Alabama in March of 2024. It’s also the first series-loss at Lindsey Nelson Stadium since dropping two of three to Florida from April 6-8 in 2023. The run-rule loss in game three to the Aggies was the first for the Vols since falling 16-2 to Georgia on March 29, 2024. Tennessee had won nine-straight SEC home series dating back to 2023.
The No. 5 Vols are back in action on Tuesday from Lindsey Nelson Stadium for a midweek bout with Alabama Sate before hitting the road to Oxford for a three-game set at No. 6 Ole Miss this weekend.
