Cannon Peebles selected by Cleveland in 17th round of MLB Draft

Tennessee junior catcher Cannon Peebles was selected selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the 17th round with the No. 522 of the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft. The slugger was a draft-eligible junior who spent two seasons on Rocky Top and the 2025 campaign as the everyday catcher.      

The junior hit for a .253 average across 178 at-bats in 2025, launching 11 home runs with 41 runs batted in and 31 runs scored. Peebles tied for second on the team with seven home runs  and 22 RBI in Southeastern Conference play. He missed one game of the Fayetteville Super Regional against Arkansas due to being ejected in the Knoxville Regional Final against Wake Forest.

Peebles’ first year with the Vols was as a sophomore in 2024 where he hit .216 with two homers and 24 RBI in 54 games with 34 starts. He saw the bulk of his cation towards the end of the season as a designated hitter for the Vols.

The catcher signed with NC State out of high school and led the Wolfpack with a .352 average, .697 slugging percentage and .456 on-base percentage as the club’s designated hitter.

Peebles did not appear as a top-500 MLB Draft prospect per Baseball America or the top-250 from MLB Pipeline ahead of draft weekend.
