In his second season, and following his 17th career game as Tennessees head coach, Josh Heupel has the Vols inside the top 10 for the first time since 2016 and for only the second time since 2006.

The Vols find themselves 8th in the country in this week’s Associated Press poll and 9th in this week’s USA Today coaches poll

The Vols jumped 3 spots in both polls following Saturday’s 38-33 win over Florida in front of a sold out crowd in Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee’s offense didn’t punt as quarterback Hendon Hooker had a career day throwing for 349 yards and two touchdowns. Hooker also ran for a career high 112 yards and a touchdown carrying the Vols to a sweep of the month of September.

The Vols have now scored 194 points in 4 games which includes an overtime win at then 14th ranked Pittsburgh.

Hooker has been terrific to start his senior season. The Virginia Tech transfer who is in his second season with the Vols is completing 72% of his passes. He has thrown for 1,193 yards 8 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Hooker also has 175 yards rushing and 3 scores with his legs.

“He was decisive with the football and accurate with the football – whether it was intermediate, short, long,” Heupel said of his quarterback’s performance against Florida. “He used his legs at the right time, created the big plays there. He’s just a tough competitor and offensively we fed off of him all game long.

“Hendon played like a warrior tonight. We had a lot of guys that did that, but Hendon was relentless in the way that he competed.”

The Vol signal caller has thrived in Josh Heupel’s system. He has thrown 2 or more touchdowns in 13 of his 15 career starts and now has 39 td passes to just 3 interceptions in a Tennessee uniform.

Tennessee has a much needed open date this weekend before playing back to back games at LSU and home to Alabama.

The Vols are hoping to get some players healthy including leading receiver Cedric Tillman who missed Saturday’s game with an ankle injury he suffered in the win over Akron.
