Tennessee’s series loss at LSU over the weekend gave the Vols three series losses in the month of April, the first time the program has dropped three series in a month since April 2018, the first year of the Tony Vitello era.

Tennessee’s tumble in the rankings continued on Monday.

The Vols (35-9, 13-8 SEC) dropped to No. 7 in the Baseball America rankings, fell four spots to No. 11 in the Perfect Game rankings and tumbled to No. 12 in the D1Baseball.com top 25, dropping six spots. The USA Baseball Coaches Poll kept Tennessee at No. 6, the only ranking that did not drop the Vols.

Tennessee gave up six unearned runs in ninth inning Friday at LSU

Friday night’s series opener at LSU was delayed over three hours, starting just before 10 p.m. Central Time, and ended hours later with the Tigers rallying for six unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-3.

Liam Doyle pitched 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while striking out six. Nate Snead took the loss after LSU scored six in the ninth, which started with two Dean Curley errors at third base.

AJ Russell started Sunday afternoon’s series finale, going 1.2 innings and throwing 37 pitches before being pulled in the second innings. The Vols jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but LSU took control with a four-run second inning on the way to a 12-2 run-rule win in eight innings.

Tennessee got a 9-3 bounce-back win Saturday night thanks to Marcus Phillips and Cannon Peebles. Phillips went 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on just three hits while striking out six and getting the win, and Peebles had five RBI, including a three-run home run that broke the game open.

Up Next: Tennessee vs. Northern Kentucky, Tuesday

Tennessee hosts Northern Kentucky on Tuesday in a 6 p.m. Eastern Time start at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The game can be streamed on SEC Network+.

The Vols have three SEC weekend series remaining on the regular-season schedule, hosting Auburn this weekend, then Vanderbilt before a trip to Arkansas. The SEC Tournament begins May 20 at Hoover Met Stadium in Hoover, Ala.

“We need fuel whatever way we can get it while we’re on this homestand,” Vitello said after Sunday’s loss. “Just need to play well at home.”
