After 11 days without a game, No. 5 Tennessee basketball is back home Tuesday for the final game of the non-conference schedule, hosting Norfolk State. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. Eastern Time start on SEC Network.

The 65-46 win over Tarleton State on December 21 was the final game before an extended Christmas break for the Vols (9-3), who have won five straight games and climbed to No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25 on Monday, their highest ranking of the season so far.

Tennessee hosts Ole Miss at Thompson-Boling Arena on January 6 in a 6 p.m. ET start on SEC Network. The Rebels improved to 10-0 with an 88-78 win over Cal in the early game in San Antonio on Saturday. The Vols go on the road in conference play for the first time on January 10 at Mississippi State, a 7 p.m. ET SEC Network game at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville.

Vols move up in rankings

Tennessee on Monday moved up one spot to No. 5 in the updated Associated Press Top 25. The Vols dropped as low as No. 17 in the poll on December 4, but have won five straight games while moving up 12 spots.

Tennessee is No. 6 in the NET ranking after Sunday’s update. The NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) replaced the RPI five years ago and is used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee to help seed the 68-team NCAA Tournament.

Tennessee is 2-3 in Quad 1 games, 3-0 in Quad 2 games and 4-0 in Quad 4 games, having not yet played a Quad 3 game.

The Vols are ranked No. 7 overall in the KenPom.com ratings. They’re ranked No. 2 in adjusted defensive efficiency, giving up 89.9 points per 100 possessions, and ranked No. 32 in adjusted offensive efficiency, scoring 114.2 points per 100 possessions.

Norfolk State: A Closer Look

The Norfolk State Spartans come to Knoxville with a 9-6 overall record after a neutral-site win over South Dakota State on December 21. After starting the season with three wins, Norfolk State lost six of its next 11 games.

The losses came against Fordham, San Jose State, Wichita State, Stony Brook, Hofstra and UTEP. 

Norfolk is ranked No. 206 overall in the KenPom ratings. The best win of the season for the Spartans came on December 1, 63-60 at VCU. 

Norfolk State is ranked No. 178 overall in adjusted offensive efficiency according to KenPom and ranked No. 241 in adjusted defensive efficiency.
