Bishop Boswell out for Tennessee Basketball against Rice

Tennessee Basketballs’ Bishop Bowell will miss a second straight game Monday night when the 20th-ranked Vols host Rice at Food City Center. Tennessee announced Boswell is out with a left leg injury that he sustained in practice.
His status is day-to-day moving forward, according to the Vols, and he will continue to be evaluated. The sophomore guard missed last Wednesday’s 99-66 win over North Florida with a foot injury.
Both Boswell and five-star freshman wing Nate Ament were limited in practice before the North Florida game, but Ament started and played 33 minutes, finishing with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
A Tennessee spokesperson said that Boswell was limited in practice for precautionary reasons, with the injury thought to not be serious.

Tennessee (3-0) and Rice (2-2) are set for an 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time start on SEC Network. The Vols host Tennessee State on Thursday to finish the five-game homestand to start the season. They then go to Las Vegas for three games in the Players Era Men’s Championship, playing Rutgers on Monday, No. 2 Houston on Tuesday then a third opponent to be determined on either Wednesday or Thursday.
Boswell started the first two games of the season, totaling 11 points and 13 rebounds in 39 minutes. He played 17 minutes against Mercer and 22 against Northern Kentucky, going 3-for-5 from the 3-point line in the two games.
Boswell started in the exhibition loss against Duke on October 26, but was scoreless in his 24 minutes on the floor. Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said afterward that it was his defense that got him in the starting lineup and extensive minutes.
“Defensively, we want that,” Barnes said. “We felt maybe we could get Moe (Amaree Abram) to come off the bench and give us some offense. I thought Bishop defensively, he’s going to compete at a high level. He’s going to do that.”

Nate Ament named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday
Ament was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week for a second straight week on Monday, after his 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists against North Florida.
He won the award last week after averaging 20.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists over his first two games with the Vols.
Ament scored a game-high 23 points in the 95-56 win over Northern Kentucky on November 8, while adding eight rebounds, five assists and two steals in 24 minutes. He appeared to be slightly hobbled in the first half after hitting a 3-point shot from the corner and getting fouled on the play.
Ament had 18 points, nine rebounds and an assist in his Tennessee debut in the 76-61 win over Mercer on November 3.
“I think each and every day he goes out, he’s learning a little bit something every day,” Barnes said last week. “I think even in practice, playing against guys that really know his game now, that can continue to push him. I think practice is still a big part of his learning experience.”
