Tennessee Basketball Coach Rick Barnes Talks After Volunteers Season Opener Against Tennessee Tech

Tennessee basketball signed four-star point guard Bishop Boswell on Wednesday, the first day of college basketball’s early signing period. Before signing, Boswell was the only commitment in the 2024 recruiting cycle for the Vols.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Boswell, out of Myers Park High School in Charlotte, N.C., committed to Tennessee on September 28, picking the Vols over Georgia, Missouri, Wake Forest and Xavier.

The fall signing period is open for one week, but Tennessee isn’t expected to make any other additions during the window. The Vols are expected to focus heavily on the transfer portal in the spring.

“We are thrilled to welcome Bishop Boswell and his mother, Brittany Boswell, to the Tennessee Basketball family,” Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said. Bishop is a great young man who exhibits superb leadership qualities.

“He is a big, versatile guard who is comfortable both scoring and facilitating. We are also excited about his ability to defend multiple positions on the other end of the court. A former football player, Bishop will also bring a high level of toughness that meshes well with our program.”

“I chose Tennessee because of the winning culture that the program has and Coach (Rick) Barnes has had over his career,” Boswell told On3 while announcing his commitment, “as well as the relationship coach has with his players to love them while also getting the best out of them and developing them on the court. Also how passionate the fans and teachers are about their student-athletes.”

Boswell is ranked No. 65 overall in the On3 Industry Ranking. He’s the No. 10 point guard in the country and the No. 7 overall prospect in the state of North Carolina.

“The way I would describe my game,” Boswell said in September, “is a physical, paint-touch point guard who can pass at a high level, defend and knock down shots.”

“You’re getting a player,” Boswell said, addressing Tennessee fans during the interview with On3’s Joe Tipton, “who’s going to do everything he can night in and night out to win as many games as possible and as many championships as possible.”

Boswell was a two-sport athlete in high school, play football and basketball, but dropped football following the 2021 season to focus more on his basketball future. Last spring he led his Myers Park team to a state championship.

“He has a strong frame with long arms,” On3’s Jamie Shaw said. “He can be a very good defender both on or off the ball. Offensively, Boswell is an aggressive player, touching the paint in straight lines and absorbing contact in the paint. He also developed the jump shot, shooting 36.5 percent on 3.7 attempts during the EYBL’s regular season.

“He was a central figure in Myers Park’s run to the North Carolina state championship,” Shaw added, “as one of the team’s leading scorers throughout the playoffs as well as handling the ball and guarding the opposing team’s top perimeter threat.”
