Tennessee went to Texas a year ago, billed as the reuniting of the Texas basketball family as Rick Barnes made his return to the Erwin Center, and trailed by 16 points with six minutes left. The Vols scored 16 unanswered points, tied the game with just under 30 seconds left, but Timmy Allen hit a free throw for Texas with six seconds left, helping Texas hold on for a 52-51 win.

Now it’s time for the Longhorns to make the return trip.

No. 4 Tennessee (17-3) hosts No. 10 Texas in a Big 12-SEC Challenge game at Thompson-Boling Arena on Saturday, a 6 p.m. Eastern Time start on ESPN.

A closer look at Texas

Chris Beard was fired on January 5 after being charged with a third-degree felony for family violence, after being arrested on December 12 for allegedly strangling his finance.

Texas named assistant coach Rodney Terry as the interim head coach. Terry, a former head coach at Fresno State and UTEP, was an assistant coach under Barnes at Texas for nine seasons, from 2002 to 2011.

Terry took over the Longhorns on December 12, when Beard was arrested and led his team to a win over Rice that night. Texas is 10-12 in 12 games under Terry, with losses to Kansas State (116-103 on January 3) and at Iowa State (78-67 on January 17).

Texas is No. 9 overall in the KenPom.com ratings, while ranked No. 12 overall in adjusted offensive efficiency and No. 26 in adjusted defensive efficiency. Texas is No. 8 overall in the NET ratings and ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has the Longhorns projected as a No. 2 seed in his latest NCAA Tournament bracket.
