The ninth-ranked Vols, who earlier this month were picked to win the Southeastern Conference ahead of Texas A&M, Arkansas and Kentucky, are coming off a 25-win season and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen last March.

The offseason included the additions of Northern Colorado wing Dalton Knecht and USC Upstate shooting guard Jordan Gainey, the son of Tennessee associate head coach Justin Gainey.

The two starred during the preseason, combining for 48 points in Tennessee’s 89-88 win at Michigan State last week, with Knecht scoring 28 and Gainey adding 20. They scored 13 each in a home exhibition win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Monday.

Rick Barnes: Zakai Zeigler to play ‘limited minutes’ in season opener

Rick Barnes said Sunday night during an appearance on ‘The Nation’ radio show that Zakai Zeigler will play limited minutes against Tennessee Tech at Thompson-Boling Arena. The junior point guard has been out since suffering a torn ACL in February.

Barnes during the interview also noted that the Vols could still will be shorthanded after transfer guard Jordan Gainey missed practice Sunday after recently becoming ill.

“We haven’t yet got to put the whole team together,” Barnes said. “We were hoping tomorrow will be the first time, and certainly it will be limited minutes for Zakai. But Jordan Gaineytoday wasn’t feeling well, missed practice.”
