Game 1: Arkansas 4, Tennessee 3

The Vols cut it to a one-run game in the top of the ninth inning Saturday on an Andrew Fischer solo home run, but Hunter Ensley grounded out and Dalton Bargo struck out to end the game.

Arkansas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second and Tennessee answered with a two-run fifth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Razorbacks got two more in the bottom of the fifth, then added another run in the sixth to make it 4-2.

Marcus Phillips (4-5) took the loss, giving up four earned runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings pitched. He struck out five while walking two, throwing 94 pitches, including 58 strikes. Arkansas starter Zach Root (8-5) got the win after giving up two runs over seven innings, striking out six with two walks.

Dean Curley hit a two-run home run in the fifth to briefly give Tennessee a lead, before Arkansas got a solo home run and an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. It was another RBI single for the Razorbacks in the sixth.

Tennessee is in the Super Regionals for a fifth straight year, the longest such streak in college baseball, and is looking for its third straight trip to the College World Series and fourth over the last five seasons.

“What’s not a positive is we were one short on the scoreboard to keep that thing rolling, so maybe a little extra motivation (Sunday),” Tennessee coach Tony Vitello said after the loss. “But obviously the difference, I think a lot of guys were really good out on that field, because there’s a lot of talent, but the difference was Root.”

Tennessee went three games in last two Super Regional appearances

The Vols went three games with Evansville in the Knoxville Super Regional last season, after losing Game 2.

Tennessee was also down 0-1 in the three-game series in the Hattiesburg Super Regional at Southern Miss in 2023. The Vols won 8-4 in Game 2, then punched their ticket to Omaha with a 5-0 win in Game 3.

The Vols swept LSU in two games in the Knoxville Super Regional in 2021, returning to the College World Series for the first time since 2005.
