The college football pregame show returned to Knoxville for the second time this season for No. 8 Tennessee's SEC rivalry game against No. 1 Alabama.

Tennessee Football will host ESPN College GameDay for next week’s SEC opener between the Vols and No. 4 Georgia at Neyland Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time on ABC.

It’s the third time ESPN’s college football pregame show has been in Knoxville during the Josh Heupel era, following the Florida and Alabama games during the 2022 season. The show will broadcast live from the lawn in front of Ayres Hall on The Hill.

The Vols (2-0) beat East Tennessee State 72-17 Saturday afternoon while Georgia beat Austin Peay 28-3 in Athens. Tennessee opened the season with a 45-26 win over Syracuse last week in Atlanta and Georgia beat Marshall 45-7 in Athens.

Tennessee has lost eight straight to Georgia, dating back to the 2016 season when Joshua Dobbs threw a Hail Mary on the final play of the game to Jauan Jennings for a 34-31 win at Sanford Stadium in Athens.

“Conference play starts on next Saturday,” Heupel said Saturday night. “We’re going to try to be the best football team on the field that Saturday. We need to be at our best.

“I certainly know who they are as a program and what they are as a football team. And we look at us being at our best and we’re going to need our fans to be at their best too next Saturday.”

Tennessee breaks modern day single-game scoring record

Tennessee on Saturday broke the modern day program record for points scored in its 72-17 win over ETSU. The Vols also set the single-game program record with 41 first downs in the win.

The 72 points broke the previous record of 71 set in the 71-0 win over Kent State last September. Tennessee also opened last season with a 69-3 win over Chattanooga.

Tennessee finished the game with 717 total yards, went 10-for-10 in the red zone and was 10-for-14 on third down. The Vols ran 100 total plays, averaging 7.2 yards per play, 12.1 yards per completion and 5.4 yards per rush.

David Sanders Jr. still sidelined for Vols

It’s unclear if Tennessee freshman right tackle David Sanders Jr. will be available for Saturday’s game, after missing the first two games of the season due to injury.

“Dave, anticipated him being ready,” Heupel said. “Ultimately, medical decided for him, for us, it probably wasn’t the best move to play him today.”

Heupel didn’t disclose the injury last week but said Sanders got “nicked up” late in practice.

Sanders is Tennessee’s starting right tackle on the team’s depth chart and Brian Grant is listed as the backup. But Jesse Perry replaced Sanders at right tackle the last two weeks while Wendell Moe replaced Perry at right guard and Shamurad Umarov replaced Moe at left guard. Sam Pendleton started at center and Lance Heard started at left tackle.
