Tennessee senior defensive lineman Jaxson Moi is day-to-day after missing the last two weeks, head coach Josh Heupel said on Monday, while junior defensive lineman Daevin Hobbs continues toward a return from a foot injury suffered late in fall camp.

“Moi, day to day,” Heupel said during his weekly press conference on Monday. “Hobbs continues to do a really good job in his rehab.”

Moi left the 45-26 season-opening win against Syracuse on August 30 with what appeared to be an arm injury.

Brent Hubbs noted on Monday afternoon that Hobbs is no longer wearing a walking boot on his injured foot and has been running on the practice field in cleats.

Hubbs also noted Hobbs is not expected to play for No. 15 Tennessee (2-1) against UAB (2-1) on Saturday (12:45 p.m. Eastern Time, SEC Network) at Neyland Stadium.

“How fast that progresses here,” Heupel said of Hobbs, “I can’t give you an answer today. But he’s done a really good job. Hopefully, we’ll have him back soon too.”

Timeline uncertain for return of CB Jermod McCoy

After hosting UAB, Tennessee goes to Mississippi State on September 27 for its first true road game of the season, in a 4:15 p.m. Eastern Time start on SEC Network. The Vols are off on October 4 for the first bye week of the season.

Heupel was also asked on Monday if Tennessee corner Jermod McCoy, who tore his ACL while training in January, could return before the first open date.

McCoy returned to the practice field and took part in individual drill work with Tennessee’s defensive backs late in fall camp, but hasn’t dressed during the first three games of the season.

“I don’t know the timeline on Jermod,” Heupel said. “And I say that meaning he’s gotten started, back out on the field, how his body responds and also being ready to go play and compete are all things that he’s got to continue to prepare for.

“He wants to be out there. He’s been a great teammate. He’s done a really good job in his rehab, too, and so has our medical team. So it’s all about how we can get him prepared to actually go out there and play.”

Tennessee’s David Sanders dealing with ‘unique injury’

Five-star freshman right tackle David Sanders Jr. also continues to be sidelined with what Heupel on Monday described as a “unique injury”. Sanders was a late scratch before the Syracuse game three weeks ago, after suffering an injury in practice on August 27.

“(It’s a) unique injury that, you know, doctors are uncertain,” Heupel said. “That’s why he’s kind of been day to day for a while here and uncertain. It’s not like a sprained ankle. And I say that meaning there’s not a definitive timeline and so he’s been having to fight through that.”

“Our medical staff is doing everything that they can,” Heupel added later. “It’s a little bit of an unknown timeframe. He could wake up tomorrow and be ready to go. Obviously he’s had some time, some healing. We hope that happens before we get to Saturday.”
